ジャズを軸に、R&B、ソウル、AOR、ポップスまで多彩なジャンルを自在に歌いこなし、聴く者を魅了している。神戸生まれ、バークリー音楽大学卒業。2007年にヴォーカリスト矢幅歩とデュオ【SOLODUO】を結成し、全国的に活動を展開。2018年にはMISIAに「Jewelry」「蒼い月影」を提供し、ツアーや紅白歌合戦にもコーラスとして参加するなど幅広く活躍。2023年にはSOLODUO結成15周年を記念しアルバム『BURRITO』をリリースし、全国ツアーを展開。自身のプロジェクト「ギラ山ジル子PROJECT」や“Geila Zilkha & Super Soul Jazz”でも精力的に活動を続けている。大阪芸術大学教授として後進の育成にも尽力。2025年には竹中俊二との最新デュオ作『MOON EXPRESS』を発表予定。
Geila Zilkha is a singer with a truly unique voice and powerful presence, captivating audiences with her versatility across jazz, R&B, soul, AOR, and pop. Born in Kobe to a Japanese mother and Israeli father, she graduated from Berklee College of Music. In 2007 she formed the vocal duo SOLODUO with Ayumu Yahaba, performing nationwide. In 2018 she wrote songs for MISIA, joined her tours and appeared as a backing vocalist at NHK’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen. In 2023, SOLODUO celebrated its 15th anniversary with the release of BURRITO and a national tour. Alongside SOLODUO, she leads projects such as the “Girayama Jiruko PROJECT” and her band Geila Zilkha & Super Soul Jazz. As a professor at Osaka University of Arts, she also devotes herself to vocal education, with her public “Vocal Workshop Live” surpassing 100 sessions. In 2025 she will release MOON EXPRESS, her long-awaited duo album with guitarist Shunji Takenaka, marking a return to the voice-and-guitar format since their acclaimed 2010 release All Me.

生い立ちと音楽の芽生え
兵庫県神戸市にて、日本人の母とイスラエル人の父の間に生まれる。保育園から高校卒業までをインターナショナル・スクール「Canadian Academy」で過ごし、幼い頃から音楽に強い関心を示す。3歳からバレエを習うが、9歳の時に脊柱側湾症と診断され、手術により背中に銅棒を埋め込むことに。バレエやスポーツを断念せざるを得なくなったが、それを機に「音楽こそが自分の道」と悟る。10歳から憧れのアルトサックスを始め、さらに音楽理解のためキーボードも学ぶ。ハイスクールではバンド活動に加え、ジャズビッグバンドのリーダーも務めた。
留学と音楽修行
高校卒業後、ボストンのバークリー音楽大学へ単身留学。アルトサックス専攻から出発するが、次第に“声こそ自分の楽器”と確信し、2年目からヴォイス専攻（Voice Major）に変更。ヴォーカル・ジャズ・アンサンブル（指導：エイプリル・アラビアン）、ヴォーカル・サミット（ボブ・ストロフ指導）、レベンス・ゴスペル・クワイヤ（オーヴァル・ライト、デニス・モンゴメリーⅢ指導）などに参加し、幅広い音楽経験を積む。1991年に卒業。
関西での活動と阪神淡路大震災
卒業後は神戸に戻り、テレビやラジオDJなど幅広く活動。FM802では自身の番組「Funky Jams 802」を3年間担当し、SUN-TVの音楽情報番組、ABCテレビ「おはよう朝日です」、関西テレビ「夢の乱入者」でアシスタントホストも務めた。だが1995年、阪神淡路大震災により活動が中断。音楽への情熱を捨てきれず、活動の拠点を東京に移す。
東京での活動とCM歌唱
上京後は、CM歌唱、ラジオDJ、声優、ナレーションなど活動を広げる。1997年開局の東京インターFMでは「JAL TOKYO BALCONY」を1年間ナビゲート。ベネッセ英語教材の声優を務めたことをきっかけに、TVCMでの歌唱・ナレーション依頼が増加。代表作にはマツダ、全日空、ハーゲンダッツなどがあり、特にANAのCMで歌った「Fly Me To The Moon」は問い合わせが殺到し大きな話題となった。
クワイヤ結成とニューヨーク
2002年、女性ゴスペルクワイヤ“Voissalot Choir”を結成し、3枚のアルバムをリリース。東京ディズニーシーやJZ Brat、スイートベイジル等で定期的にライブ活動を展開。2009年には念願のニューヨーク・アポロシアターでのパフォーマンスを実現。
出産と教育活動
2004年、ニューヨークで長男を出産。半年後に歌手活動を再開。2006年、洗足学園音楽大学にジャズヴォーカル科講師として迎えられ、教育活動も開始。
SOLODUO結成とソロ活動
2007年、ヴォーカリスト矢幅歩と出会い、デュオユニット【SOLODUO】を結成。ライブ活動を精力的に展開する。2010年には「神戸ジャズ・ヴォーカル・クイーン・コンテスト」でグランプリを受賞、副賞として出演したシアトル名門クラブ「ジャズアレイ」のステージで好評を博した。同年10月には初ソロアルバム『All Me』をリリース。ジャズ専門誌や一般紙でも大きく取り上げられ、注目を集めた。
2011年には2ndアルバム『appearance』をリリースし全国ツアーを敢行。2013年には【SOLODUO】として『breathing…』を、同年に3rdソロアルバム『Day Dreaming』をリリース。
プロジェクトの拡がりと評価
2016年には「ギラ山ジル子PROJECT」で昭和歌謡をジャズにRe-Styleした『ONE』『TWO』を発表。同年【SOLODUO】として『Morning Light』もリリース。2018年にはSOLODUO結成10周年アルバム『Twelve Letters』、ライブアルバム『Live at The GLEE』を発表。MISIAに楽曲提供（「Jewelry」「蒼い月影」）し、自身もMISIAツアーのコーラスや紅白歌合戦出演を果たす。
2019年、ユニバーサルミュージックより「ケンちゃん」「ダメですか」を配信、50歳でメジャーデビュー。同年アルバム『50』をリリース。2020年にはコロナ禍でYouTube番組「ねごとの音」を開始、ジャズライブハウス支援クラウドファンディングも実施。
Geila Zilkha & Super Soul Jazz と受賞歴
2015年に結成したバンド「Geila Zilkha & Super Soul Jazz」は2022年に『ORIGINALS』『COVERS』を同時リリース。第35回ミュージック・ペンクラブ音楽賞ポピュラー部門「最優秀作品賞」に史上初、同一人物の2作同時ノミネートを果たした。
教育者として
大阪芸術大学教授としてヴォーカル教育に携わり、公開型ワークショップ「VOCAL WORKSHOP LIVE」は2023年に開催100回を達成。後進の育成にも力を注ぐ。
最新活動
2023年、SOLODUO結成15周年を記念しニューアルバム『BURRITO』をリリースし、全国ツアーを展開。マイケル・ジャクソン『Thriller』のカバーも披露。
2024年8月15日、バースデーライブで「ギラ山ジル子PROJECT」第3弾『THREE』を発表。日本の名曲をブラジリアン・ジャズにRe-Styleするコンセプトで制作を進行中。
2025年には竹中俊二（g）とのデュオで15年ぶりとなるアルバム『MOON EXPRESS』をレコーディング。2010年の『All Me』からの深化を経て、再びギター＆ヴォーカルの真髄を響かせる。CDは2025年10月15日発売、デジタル配信は同年11月12日開始予定。2026年にかけて全国ツアーで作品を届けていく。

Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born in Kobe to a Japanese mother and Israeli father, she attended Canadian Academy, an international school, from kindergarten through high school. From an early age she showed a strong interest in music. She studied ballet from the age of three, but at nine was diagnosed with scoliosis and underwent surgery to have metal rods implanted in her back. Forced to give up ballet and sports, she realized that “music is my path.” At age ten she began playing her beloved alto saxophone, later adding piano for a deeper understanding of music. In high school she led the jazz big band while also performing in bands.
Studies Abroad and Musical Training
After graduation she moved alone to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. Initially majoring in alto saxophone, she soon realized her voice was her true instrument, and in her second year switched to Voice Major. She joined ensembles such as April Arabian’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Bob Stoloff’s Vocal Summit, and the Reverence Gospel Choir led by Orville Wright and Dennis Montgomery III. She graduated in 1991.
Kansai Activities and the Great Hanshin Earthquake
Returning to Kobe, she worked broadly in TV and radio. She hosted her own show “Funky Jams 802” on FM802 for three years, and appeared on SUN-TV, ABC’s “Ohayō Asahi desu,” and Kansai TV’s music program “Yume no Ran’nyūsha” as assistant host. In 1995 the Great Hanshin Earthquake forced her to suspend her activities, but her passion for music led her to relocate to Tokyo.
Tokyo Career and Commercial Work
In Tokyo she expanded into commercial singing, radio DJ work, narration, and voice acting. In 1997 she hosted “JAL Tokyo Balcony” for the newly launched InterFM. Providing voices for Benesse English learning materials led to frequent TV commercial singing and narration work. Major credits include Mazda, All Nippon Airways, and Häagen-Dazs. Her rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon” for ANA sparked a flood of inquiries and became a sensation.
Choir and New York
In 2002 she founded the women’s gospel choir Voissalot Choir, releasing three albums and performing regularly at Tokyo DisneySea, JZ Brat, and Sweet Basil. In 2009 they achieved their dream of performing at New York’s Apollo Theater.
Motherhood and Education
In 2004 she gave birth to her son in New York. Six months later she resumed performing. In 2006 she began teaching as a jazz vocal instructor at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.
SOLODUO and Solo Career
In 2007 she met vocalist Ayumu Yahaba and together they formed the duo SOLODUO, launching into active live performances. In 2010 she won the Kobe Jazz Vocal Queen Contest, earning the chance to perform at Seattle’s famed Jazz Alley to great acclaim. That October she released her debut solo album All Me, widely praised in jazz publications and national newspapers.
In 2011 she released her second album appearance and toured nationwide. In 2013 she released breathing… with SOLODUO and her third solo album Day Dreaming.
Expanding Projects and Recognition
In 2016 she launched the Girayama Jiruko PROJECT, re-styling classic Japanese pop songs into jazz, releasing the albums ONEand TWO. That year SOLODUO also released Morning Light. In 2018, for SOLODUO’s 10th anniversary, she released Twelve Letters and the live album Live at The GLEE. She provided MISIA with songs such as “Jewelry” and “Aoi Tsukikage,” also joining her tours and appearing as chorus on national TV including NHK’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen.
In 2019 she made her major label debut at age 50 with Universal Music, releasing the singles “Ken-chan” and “Dame desu ka,” and the album 50. In 2020, during the pandemic, she launched the YouTube program Negoto no Oto and organized crowdfunding campaigns to support jazz clubs.
Geila Zilkha & Super Soul Jazz
Formed in 2015, her band Geila Zilkha & Super Soul Jazzreleased the studio albums ORIGINALS and COVERS in 2022.
As an Educator
As a professor at Osaka University of Arts, she is dedicated to vocal education. Her public “Vocal Workshop Live” has become a popular project, surpassing 100 sessions by 2023.
Recent Activities
In 2023, SOLODUO celebrated its 15th anniversary with the release of the album BURRITO and a nationwide tour, including a cover of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
On August 15, 2024, she unveiled THREE, the third installment of the Girayama Jiruko PROJECT, re-styling Japanese classics into Brazilian jazz.
In 2025 she will release MOON EXPRESS, her first duo album in 15 years with guitarist Shunji Takenaka, following their acclaimed 2010 work All Me. The CD will be released October 15, 2025, with digital distribution on November 12, followed by a nationwide tour extending into 2026.
Name Origin
Her name “Geila” means “joy” in Hebrew, derived from the celebratory folk song Hava Nagila.
